Rye is the one cultivated cereal that is genuinely wind-pollinated and cross-fertilising, and it is grown across Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and southern Finland on a scale that makes it an agricultural pollen source in its own right. Wheat, barley and oats are largely self-pollinating and release far less into the air.
Wann es in der Luft ist
Rye flowers for roughly a week to ten days at the turn of June into July, straight into the wild grass peak. For someone living beside arable land in the Baltic, that week can be the single worst of the year, and it is invisible on any calendar built from wild grasses alone.
Wie es sich anfühlt
Identical to the grass season and often more intense while a nearby field is flowering, because the exposure is concentrated and local rather than regional.
Womit es kreuzreagiert
Rye pollen allergens are homologues of the timothy allergens, so rye and meadow grass cross-react thoroughly and are usually a single sensitivity. Reacting to rye pollen in the field is not the same as reacting to rye bread on the table: baked cereal protein is a different exposure through a different route, and rye flour allergy is mainly an occupational problem for bakers.

Benannte Allergenmoleküle:Sec c 1 and Sec c 5, homologues of the timothy major allergens. Das sind die offiziellen WHO/IUIS-Namen, und das ist, was ein komponentenaufgelöster Bluttest berichtet.
Was wirklich hilft
Rye is not separately forecast. If a bad week each year lines up with a neighbouring field turning from green to grey-brown, that is the explanation, and it is worth planning around: the flowering window is short and predictable, and it is the week to keep windows shut on the field side of the house.
Was falsch gelesen wird
People who react during the rye flowering week often conclude they must avoid rye bread. Pollen allergy and food allergy to the same plant are separate conditions with separate proteins, and cutting out bread on the strength of a summer field is not a decision to take without a clinician looking at it.

Rye and cereals ist auf dem Festland in der Luft ab june to july, die schwersten Tage the turn of June into July.
