This is reference information, not a diagnosis and not a treatment plan. A pollen calendar cannot tell you what you are allergic to, and no page can clear a food as safe for you — only the label on the packet in your hand and the clinician who knows your history can do that. Anything beyond mild, short-lived symptoms in the mouth or nose — swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, hives away from the mouth, wheeze, vomiting or faintness — is an emergency question, not a reading question.

Where it grows here

Ribwort plantain is the narrow-leaved rosette with a short brown flower spike that grows in every lawn, verge, path edge and trampled corner from Denmark to Lapland. It is so ordinary that almost nobody notices it flowering, and it flowers for months.

When it is in the air

Plantain flowers from June into August, overlapping grass completely and continuing after grass has finished. Its long tail is one reason some people find that summer symptoms drag on into August after the grass calendar says the season is over.

What it feels like

A moderate but persistent summer rhinitis that outlasts the grass peak. It rarely announces itself as its own season, because it never has the region to itself.

What it cross-reacts with

The major allergen Pla l 1 belongs to the same protein family as the major allergens of ash and olive, which is a genuinely useful link: a person sensitised to ash in spring can be reacting to plantain in summer through related proteins. There is no established plantain food syndrome. Plantain leaf is used in herbal preparations, which is a separate question from the pollen.

Related pollens: ash and olive, through the shared Ole e 1-like protein family.

Foods: no established cross-reaction. That is a useful negative — a food reaction in someone sensitised to ribwort plantain is not explained by the pollen and deserves its own assessment.

Named allergen molecules: Pla l 1 (an Ole e 1-like protein), Pla l 2 (profilin). These are the official WHO/IUIS names, and they are what a component-resolved blood test reports.

What actually helps

Mowing suppresses plantain flowering the same way it suppresses grass, so a maintained lawn is a much lower exposure than a verge or a path edge. There is no forecast for it; the grass forecast is the usable proxy through June and July, and August symptoms with a clear grass forecast are a reason to consider plantain or mugwort instead.

What gets misread

August symptoms are habitually blamed on a late grass season. The calendar says grass is fading by then, and plantain, mugwort and mould spores are all still running.

Frequently asked questions

When is ribwort plantain pollen season in the Baltics and Finland?

Ribwort plantain is airborne from june to august on the mainland, with the heaviest days late June through July. Denmark and southern Sweden run two to three weeks earlier, and northern Finland, Sweden and Norway three to four weeks later.

Which foods cross-react with ribwort plantain pollen?

None that is established. Ribwort plantain has no recognised pollen-food syndrome, so a food reaction in someone allergic to it usually has a separate cause worth investigating on its own.

Is there a live ribwort plantain pollen forecast?

No. The CAMS European forecast that most pollen services publish covers alder, birch, grass, mugwort, ragweed and olive only, so ribwort plantain has a season on the calendar but no forecast number.

How strong an allergen is ribwort plantain?

Moderate potency, which is a statement about the pollen and not about how much of it is in the air. The two come apart: some of the most abundant particles of the northern summer are among the weakest allergens.
